Foot Preparation
- It is important to appreciate the immature nature of the foal’s foot.
Dress foot, debride.
Using a 2mm straight burr make up to 6 small indentations around each side
of the lower margin of the hoof wall, approximately 2mm
deep, end on, enlarge diameter of depression by moving in a circular
motion. Ensure indentations are no more than half the depth of the wall.
The younger the foal the shallower the indentations, the more developed the
hoof the indentations can be larger and less in number.
Ensure the waxy periople horn is removed from around the heels, where
adhesive will be applied.
Clean hoof with surgical spirit, using cleaning brush. The foot will then
be ready for reception of the shoe.
To create a mild, medial or lateral extension
on a shoe for young foal follow usual fitting
instructions up to fitting to the foot, then off set the shoe in the
direction required whilst maintaining a good mating contact around the
flange model as required. Also refer to the fitting instructions –
Using Hoof Repair granules when creating extensions.
